  7. This software adds/replaces many new graphic formats in PageStream
  8. V3.x/4.x.   It's  a  real  PageStream filter and not a script.
  9. It offers following benefits:
  10.  
  11. - It does not only add new formats, it also improves already
  12.   supported  formats by offering more complete format support.
  13.  
  14. - Speed for certain file formats is higher
  15.  
  16. - The filter does not need much memory
  17.  
  18. - Reliability is a major concern. In case of problems,
  19.   this filter will provide complete error info with possible
  20.   fix-hints and retry options.

  22. - The filter uses the IRW library for loading. This means,
  23.   locale support and more...

  26. The Universal filter shipps with the IRW library currently supporting:
  27.  
  28.       BMP:  1,  4, 8, 16, 24 and 32 Bit, Windows V3 and OS/2 format,
  29.             RLE4, 8, 24 compression
  30. DataTypes:  OS 3.0 DataTypes
  31.       DCX:  only the first image is printed
  32.       GIF:  <not available in all versions>
  33.  IFF ILBM:  including HAM, HAM8, EHB, CMYK
  34.      JPEG:  8, 24 and 32 Bit JFIF, CMYK, progressive JPEG
  35.       PCX:  1,2,4,8 and 24 Bit images
  36. PGM/PBM/PPM:  P1-P6 types with up to 48 Bit
  37.       PNG:  1-48 Bit, incl. interlaced
  38.     Targa:  supports all known RGB, RGBA types incl. compression
  39.      TIFF:  1-64 Bit, RGB, RGBA, CMYK, YCbCr with None, PackBits,
  40.             RLE, JPEG, G3, G4 and Next compression, Strips
  41.             or Tiles, Packed or separate color
  42.             <LZW compression not available in all versions>

  44. This is the second major release of the Universal filter.  The
  45. number of changes and enhancements since version 1.x are too big
  46. in order to list them here.
